Ponsonby News sat down with us to ask a few questions about what we do
“New Zealand’s first bespoke watch company. Meet Brett Band, the founder of local watch company Paceracer.
Brett has brought an industry that encompasses romance, history, class, and theatre to New Zealand shores. For Brett, making a watch from start to finish, cutting metal with rubies, diamond, and sapphire with the miniature tools involved is a spectacular process for someone who appreciates design and precision.
“It is a hugely rewarding experience to be able to deliver it to the client and us to look back together at the sketches while holding the finished watch in hand,” says Brett.
Tell us about your background
I started off by studying Industrial Design at AUT. After a few years as a designer out of uni, I found myself as a design strategist at Methven, and over the 5-year span, my team and I won multiple Red Dot Awards. I had always wanted to create my own watch, something I thought was impossible. Now in 2020, Paceracer does this for others and I am loving every moment of it.
What makes you unique?
I believe we are the only place in the world offering Provenance. We offer custom engraving for all orders of Sangfroid and Provenance.
What is the Provenance service?
Provenance is our bespoke, customisable service. We take you on a collaborative journey where every element of the watch is taken into account, from the metals to the dial movement.
Who are your clients?
Our clients come from all walks of life. Often the common similarity is that they want to celebrate a special someone or signify a time passed. Where do they find their inspiration? It has been really interesting hearing everyone’s stories so far. Expressionism, Art Deco, and Japanese Modernism have been influences to name a few. Most of our clients are inspired by good design and sentimentality from their past.
How long does the process take?
The experience time frame can vary depending on the client’s needs. The Original Sangfroid takes two to four weeks, whereas the Provenance service can take two to six months.
How can I get a watch? We are located on Ponsonby Road, so come on in! Or give me a call and let me know what you are after.
